For me, the action is the juice.

The members of the Armed Presence Unit are veterans who have been hardened in the streets, in riots, in raids, and in any number of the low-intensity conflicts that Bureau Aegis is constantly involved in.

Nicknamed "Jackboots," this unit is generally assigned to nasty and dangerous work on the ground. It's nasty for the hours; they spend long periods, sometimes months away from home, on missions that are not very pleasant and are always very complex. It could be a Nomad mining colony in Human Edge; it could be shutting down conflicts on Paradiso in the aftermath of a skirmish or border conflict. It could be farther away - on the far side of one of the new wormholes, where tensions between explorers, settlers, and national interests all collide.

Why do they do it? Well, because they like it. They love it. For them, the action IS the juice. They genuinely consider O-12's governing ideals of Cooperation, Unity, Support, and Progress to be worth upholding. Every Jackboot has already completed at least one tour of duty, and could probably shift into a desk job of supervisory role, but why bother? Instead, the Armed Presence Unit elects for advanced, non-intrusive biotechnological enhancements and continue to fight - though they do it for varying reasons.

Some like to help people. Some like killing. Some like the prestige of being part of a veteran unit. Some even like their co-workers.

Regardless of their reason, they consider themselves to be valuable members of SWORDFOR. you need an iron boot to crush the dragon's skull and free the innocent from evil that holds them in their grip. Jackboots do not see themselves as oppressive; they use force too frequently, but only because they consider their mere presence to be a bad sign. If the Jackboots are there, it means things are bad, and they're needed.


The members of this unit, better known as Jackboots, are assigned the nastiest and most dangerous work on the ground, the kind that no one wants because it’s risky and doesn’t get good press. They’re all volunteers, because you need to be strongly committed to Bureau Aegis’ values to join the Armed Presence Unit.

Their duty involves longterm deployments, spending months away from their families and what is considered a “normal life” in the most unsavory and undesirable corners of the Human Sphere, always exposed to being targeted by all hostile players in the area, and being constantly slammed by the press and activists.

Nobody likes having the Jackboots arrive, because they’re a reminder of how bad things are, so everyone tends to be biased against them and rejects them in a way that’s always obvious and never pleasant. Their job is not for rookies, nor for the faint of heart or mind. The scenarios they must face are always complex, if not downright impossible, but the Jackboots aren’t afraid to go for broke. With their enhancement implants, their weaponry, and their training and experience, they know they can handle any situation and tackle anything in their path. [1]
