Background
Surely you’ve heard about a secret base located in some unknown corner of Svalarheima, a research and reverse-engineering facility studying alien technology, and more specifically VoodooTech. It’s a classic conspiracy theory, an update of the Area 51 myth from 20th century North America, an urban legend that holds a place of honor in our social imagination. Then you’d be shocked if I told you that the site is real, it exists, and it does engage in alien-technology research. Moreover, it’s used as a maximum-security prison for those POWs of the Combined Army—and, according to some sources, Tohaa as well—who may be of help, whether voluntarily or not, in the research conducted there.
This base’s codename is Ulveslør (Norwegian for “Wolf’s Lair”) Station due to its mobility, because, just like wolves, Ulveslør is a portable base that can be broken down and relocated in record time. Given the strategic importance of the research conducted there, the location of these facilities is considered highly confidential intel. Secrecy is the main source of security for this type of base: once the enemy knows its location, the risk of intrusion is constant, so it needs to be relocated immediately.
However, occasionally there’s no time and the enemy shows up before it can be moved. And the enemy will send the best and most prepared to secure the spoils of such a juicy prize, so the security team can’t afford to fall short: it has to be made up of the most skilled, those who can step up and kick their asses back. These are the Vargar, the wolves that dwell in this den, just as ferocious as the lupine creatures of Norse mythology they are named after, and always eager to throw themselves at the neck of anyone who dares to invade their domain. The Vargar are a unit of utmost efficiency, always at full capacity, always at their maximum performance level. There are three rotating teams: one guarding Ulveslør, one on stand-by, and another deployed in some war zone or at the service of the Hexahedron, because being active is the best way to keep your fangs sharp.
Since the unit was created, the Vargar have accumulated the most victories in the annual competitions between the different spec-op units of the PanOceanian Military Complex. Evil tongues speak of experimental hardware and even of enhancement drugs secretly developed at Ulveslør Station. But even if this were true, it takes far more than a couple of toys to win those tournaments. And the Vargar have everything it takes to prevail in a competition as well as in battle, no matter how hard. It’s what’s required of them in order to keep Ulveslør Station secure and safely hidden in the haze of urban legends.[1]
