Background

Volunteer unit that recruits civilians as well as soldiers to operate as zero-g security specialists. Strong initiative and expensive "Spar" armor. Widely beloved protectors of civilians, stations, and silk.

The Sekban Unit was created by the Sultan as a regular voluntary corps to serve as a defense force for Haqqislamite orbitals and caravansaries. The voluntary character of the unit was the reason it received the name of the old irregular musketeer regiments of the Ottoman Empire, which also used volunteer troops. Initially, the Sekban were a garrison unit, without a calling or training as an elite force. Its members were expected by the High Command and the general population to serve as a deterrent for pirates and raiders, and little more. But that changed with the tragic events of the Silk Revolts. When dissident Silk traders turned against the government after Hachib Mudassar decreed strict fiscal reforms, and used their vast resources to hire mercenaries to consolidate their power base, the Sekban remained firm and loyal. All the money in the hands of those who wanted to establish a plutocracy and oppress their families and neighbors could not buy the loyalty of a corps steeped in Haqqislamite ideals and with a duty to defend. The Sekban fought hard and fought well, often isolated in remote caravansaries in distant systems, without the possibility of receiving reinforcements or support. They obtained many victories, but they also suffered defeats. The worst of them was when, despite their sacrifices, they were outnumbered and failed to avert the Al-Umara Station Massacre. The Silk Revolts left their mark on this unit, and changed it forever.

When the revolts ended, they were no longer a garrison unit, but a veteran corps that could stand up to anyone. The Sultanate rewarded their loyalty by transferring them to the Special Operations Command, where they were rebuilt as an elite assault unit. Although members are still recruited from among the civilian population, candidates now have to endure an extremely severe training, because the Sekban Unit will not allow a slaughter of innocents like the Al-Umara Station Massacre to happen again while one of its members still stands.

Equipment

Sekban wear Spar armor developed by Istehkam Heavy Industries. Often worn by Haqqislamite corsairs, Spar armour is most famously associated with the Sekban Naval Special Unit. With their distinctive, understated military patterning, the Sekban and the Spar armour they wear are indistinguishable and iconic. Versions of the Spar worn by corsairs or sold through private channels are typically flamboyantly decorated. Armour ornamentation that even closely resembles the Sekban pattern is banned and falsifying it a punishable offence. Where some units seek to announce themselves through distinctive and loud colours and patterning, the Sekban, by contrast, use a muted palette and design, an understatement that exemplifies their ideology.

Designed specifically for operations in low- and zero-gravity environments, the Spar series is extremely well designed and highly protective. It incorporates Istehkam Heavy Industries’ famously advanced automedical and life support systems redeveloped and miniaturised for this lighter armour and is perfectly designed to complement the operational environments and parameters of the Sekban Naval Special Unit. Versions of the Spar are even favoured among pirate crews and naval assault teams from independent mercenary companies. While none of the armours detailed above are classed as powered armour, all of them represent different ways the technologies developed for powered armour have been refined, miniaturised, and repurposed to fulfil specific needs. Without the advent of powered armour in the NeoColonial Wars, it is doubtful that any of these armours would exist in the refined form they do. While it is undeniable that technologies seeking to fill these needs would have been attempted, the integrated systems of life support, exoskeletal strength, software developments, and strong but lightweight armour systems that power armour requires have fed a boom in military technologies across a host of areas.

Sekban are equipped with a variety of weapons, all of which are produced by Askari AS®. The Sayad is the standard service rifle, usually loaded with AP ammo. The Fateh is a light squad support weapon, referred to as a spitfire, with a high caliber, lightweight 70 round magazine. The Hakam (Arbitrator) HRL is used sparingly due to their naval operations. Doctors and breachers carry the Fahd boarding shotgun. Finally, Sekban are universally equipped with the Devcon Arms® Slammer-7™ Chain-colt.

Quotes

“Surrender now and you will be treated by the rules of the Concilium Convention. Otherwise, you will die. We are the dividing line. Behind us, there are our people. Our mission is to protect them. That means you will never get through. At this point, you get to decide your fate.”
---Bayar Korel, Amir (officer) of the Sekban unit. Defense of the Marzuqah Caravansary. Peak of the NeoColonial Wars.
