Perseus, the Myrmidon who chose to live to keep fighting instead of commit suicide to avoid a Sepsitorisation which, finally, never happened. Considered a traitor by his former brothers in arms, Perseus has offered his sword in the service of the Nomads, alongside whom he has demonstrated he is still one of the best assault operatives in the Sphere, created for war and destruction.[1]

“Under no circumstances will measures be put in place to rescue/recover an SSS operative alive that has been taken prisoner by Combined Army forces.”

What is it like to be corrupted?

What does it feel like, if anything at all.

How do you know at what point you stopped being yourself?

When Perseus returned home, he wasn’t greeted with fanfare. On the contrary, his retinas reflected the image of his former squadmates drawing their weapons while their smiles faded from their faces.

Any agent of ALEPH knows that after being taken prisoner by the Combined Army, returning home is not a possibility. No one will try to rescue them, and they will be executed by their former comrades should they survive their time in captivity..

Despite everything, there he was - trying to return home after being captured and sent to a Morat Supremacy prison camp. He had survived not only the enemy, but his own Myrmidon programming, which didn’t stop reminding him that he must activate the L-Gland to destroy his Cube and with it, any possible threat of corruption to the AI systems.

When he felt the bullets whizzing by his ear, Perseus didn’t have time to wonder why. He merely escaped using all of his innovative capacity, finding solutions where it seemed impossible. However, sometimes he still wonders about what it was that prompted him to return to the battlelines of ALEPH's forces. Was it corruption from a sepsitor that had guided him down this path? Or was it a matter of devotion to his faction and the desire to spread the data he had stolen during his incarceration? He’s still not sure…

Like almost anywhere in the galaxy, the Nomad Nation was where he now belongs. Perseus knows well that if he is corrupted, it hasn’t altered his Cube: all his self-diagnostics has assured him of this fact. He is quite sure about this - or at least that is what he tells himself every night when he tries to fall asleep.[2]

Perseus (Ancient Greek: Περσεύς), hero and demigod of Greek mythology, son of Zeus and Danaë, founder of the city of Mycenae and of the Perseid dynasty of the Danaus. The deaths of the Gorgon Medusa and of the sea monster Cetus are attributed to Perseus, as well as the rescue of Princess Andromeda—he is considered one of the greatest heroes of Ancient Greece.

Comments by Thamyris the Aoidos for the Information Service of the SSS: “Perseus, the traitor. Actually, he was never one of us. He was never a warrior from the Iliad, but an individualistic hero brought forward from other myths, an experiment of ALEPH’s whose courage and skill were corrupted by selfishness and fear of death. He should have killed himself instead of letting them take him, prisoner. May now shame and the blade of our swords fall upon him rather than allow him to endanger the whole Sphere with the corruption he could be carried in secret.”

Perseus was a member of the third generation or Myrmidons, which was created to be sent to the front in the Paradiso conflict. During his psychogenesis, he already displayed a courageous but strongly individualistic behavior, which set him apart from his brothers in arms. However, his main differentiating feature was that he always tried to come up with new tactics to deal with the combat situations presented to him in his virtual training. Perseus dismissed the existing tried-and-tested solutions his instructors tried to hammer into him, and he looked for other alternatives that were not in their handbooks. He was a genius of tactics, as unpredictable as he was to kill.

Once in Paradiso, it was precisely this Myrmidon’s lateral thinking capability for tactics that saved the day for his unit on several occasions. His ability to find a solution in the field that other officers had not thought of would earn him some prestige in the Steel Phalanx. He even began to be considered a candidate to be part of Achilles’s Homeridae.

However, during an operation at the Norstralia front, his unit was surrounded and outnumbered, and summarily annihilated by Morat shock troops. Perseus was wounded, captured, and taken to a prison camp of the Supremacy. Once he regained consciousness, Myrmidon should have executed Directive 7: activating his L-gland to disable his Cube and end his life in order to avoid the danger of potential Sepsitorization or his Cube being corrupted.

But suicide was far from Perseus’s mind because he always looked for alternative solutions and new opportunities. Self-diagnostics showed that his Cube did not show signs of corruption, and there was much to learn in the prison camp. Perseus understood his confinement as a unique opportunity to conduct an espionage exercise. After a dangerous data theft in the camp director’s office and a spectacular escape, Perseus managed to reach the lines of the ALEPH forces, only to be greeted with friendly fire as he had been deemed a traitor.

Perseus barely escaped from his former brothers-in-arms and headed towards Nomad lines, where they were happy to do something that would cross the AI. There, he was subjected to a thorough battery of tests, then sent to Praxis, and after a period of time, Tunguska; so, he could get a complete diagnosis and be disconnected from ALEPH—as they were very much looking forward to taking the opportunity to practice some reverse engineering with the technology used by the AI.

Once the experts of the Observance, the Interventors, the Oubliettes, and scientists from several Black Labs in Praxis determined that Perseus did not pose any danger, he was offered a position as a free operative in the Tunguska Jurisdictional Command. This way, the liberation of the former Myrmidon, more than just a challenge to ALEPH, became an outright slap in the face.

However, ALEPH still believes that the danger of corruption continues to be present, as the EI can be very insidious, so it has not withdrawn in its search and execute order against Perseus just yet. This is an order that cannot be activated as long as the former Myrmidon is still operating under Nomad command, but the AI only has to wait for the right time, and if there is something this renegade knows well, it is that ALEPH is very patient. Nonetheless, this is not something that would daunt Perseus. He considers that being a Myrmidon, he was created to protect humanity and his duty is never to give up in this endeavor. But there is a shadow that haunts him. What if, despite the Nomad check-up, ALEPH is right and his Cube has been compromised? What if he is a time bomb armed by the EI without him being aware of it? Perseus cannot prevent this beyond a shadow of a doubt. All he can do is live a life that compensates for any possible future betrayal. Hence, when he is not operating on Tunguska’s orders, this warrior travels the Sphere ready to fight injustice anywhere, even in the darkest corners that have been forgotten by the O-12. Capable of finding a way out of any situation, Perseus will do whatever needs to be done to change things, and as the good Myrmidon, he is, his solution will most probably be violent. A hero to many, a traitor to some, he is a wanted man for either of those reasons. You can call him an outlaw, a rebel, or even Robin Hood if you want, he does not care about labels. The only thing pushing him forward is his desire to protect people and make the Sphere into the place humanity deserves to live in, regardless of whatever happens to his Cube.[3]

"Andromeda? Yeah we know each other. It's complicated. Of course she's tried to kill me, but I shouldn't hold it against her. Everybody in the SSS is trying to kill me."
