Background

Being a violent, belligerent and militarized species, the Morat know killing and warfare. It’s like, their thing. And one thing they are well aware of is that sometimes it takes much more than just fierce assault troops and big artillery to tear the enemy apart and cause such a brutal psychological impact to the few survivors that they can only choose between fleeing and hiding.

There are times when the adversary is so alien and different that the usual tactics aren't enough and you need a specialist shock team, small but capable of causing significantly more damage than any conventional unit. It's not a question of firepower or weapons deployment, since the Morat Supremacy already has exemplary troops of this kind. What's needed is a unit that specializes in True Death and assassination. Every shot fired by one of its members guarantees a casualty, every hit is a mortal wound. This is a shock unit capable of taking any position by assault, leaving a trail of dead bodies in its wake, casualties for which there will be no possibility of Resurrection whatsoever. They're troops who have carefully studied their adversaries and not only know how to kill them for good, but have become true experts at it. It's a small force capable of causing panic and terror within the ranks of their enemies, relentless and ruthless, the embodiment of death for any foe, no matter how tough and veteran they might be.

This platoon is named Kyosot, after the dagger used by Morat warriors of old to deliver a merciful death blow, one that put an end to the suffering of wounded adversaries and spared them the humiliation of defeat and enslavement. According to some rumors, its origins go back to an ancient secret society of soldiers who rejected Morat slave culture and would kill any Morat adversary they deemed worthy of an honorable death in combat. These troops specialized in fighting techniques focused on lethally damaging their target, becoming experts in delivering mortal wounds. Hidden among other Morat forces to avoid being annihilated, this brotherhood survived forages, killing any worthy adversary its members came across, going unnoticed in the chaos of battle. However, their end might have come at the moment when the Supremacy came together and began to conquer other species.

Their enemies weren't Morats - who would be deserving of an honorable death. Just weaker species that would be slaves of the Supremacy.

Still, they know their own people. One day, there will be a civil war; one day, it will be Morat against Morat once again. Maybe secession from the Ur, maybe Morats rebelling against the rulers, maybe some internal strife. But when that day comes, the Kyosot will be ready to strike down any Morat with their lethal blows.

They are the mercy of a quick death.
