Background

Vaarso Battlespeak notation: The Tohaa Trident utilizes the single thousands to denominate its special-purpose units, but some numerologically powerful figures can, when they occur in consonance, carry strongly negative connotations. Such is the case of number Kosuil, 7040, which conjures up implications of discord and ruination, abuse of power, callousness, crudeness, and malice. The Kosuil received the number 7040. Single thousands are used to denominate irregular units. 7,000 is traditionally understood to stand for discord, ruination, malice, and betrayal. Even the 40 cannot fully offset these negative qualities, but it provides a glimmer of hope that the negative qualities of the 7,000 will be softened, or with time, even entirely removed, from the bearer of the number.

Profile: A civilization forced to involve all its economic resources in a war of attrition without an end in sight is bound to feel its options fade away just as quickly as its assets. It was inevitable that the Tohaa lose the political will to devote some of those dwindling resources to sustaining a criminal population, locked away in costly prisons where they are nothing but a burden to the war effort. The Trident’s answer to the unwarranted costs of its military prisons was to fund a series of penal regiments in which the criminal and dishonorable elements of the military could still serve a purpose to the society they had so failed. Ideally, these criminals would also be rehabilitated… assuming they proved durable enough, that is.

One of such regiments is the Kosuil, a penal unit of combat engineers trained to use their skills for purposes of aggression. To create this regiment, the Trident scoured its military prisons for former members of assault and frontline units, engineers and technicians who had sold their services in the black market, treasonous saboteurs, and terrorists. None of them were exactly the saintly type. They were chosen for their checkered records and evaluated on their potential usefulness in sabotage, chaos, and destruction operations: the sort of unsavory jobs that couldn’t be entrusted to straight-shooting, law-abiding career soldiers. Kosuil pioneers undergo accelerated training in demolition techniques and support weapons, and they soon gain an intimate understanding of the destructive potential of their arsenal. This is a common phenomenon when both soldier and weapon enjoy their jobs. High Command knows what makes this unit tick, even if the truth would be a hard pill to swallow for the civilian population: the Kosuil will stoop to any depths. Send them into hell and they will have no qualms carrying out your most objectionable orders. They’re already criminals, they’re already tainted. Who cares if these wrongdoers have to cross some lines? As far as the Kosuil are concerned, there are no lines to cross, only orders received and missions accomplished. Nothing else could earn them their freedom and their ticket out of the war zone.

Kosuil are etremely good at using explosives. Masters of it. They also have fully-enclosed high-tech suits.

In a society that has remained in the state of war for dozens of years, there is no room for being wasteful. The war of attrition against the EI has taken a considerable toll on the social fabric of the society. One of the most interesting social developments was the abolishing of state penalties for most minor offences, as the resources spent on maintenance of the prison population was better used elsewhere — on the front. The Trident is no different from the society as a whole in that regard. Several penal regiments were established to provide military offenders with a chance of redeeming themselves and proving that they are a valuable asset to keep around. If they don’t manage to earn their reputation back, they quickly find a shallow grave waiting for them. The attrition rates in those penal regiments are definitely higher than in the by-the-book units.

Kosuil Pioneers are one such regiment. They are a penal unit that recruits from engineers, techs, tinkerers, saboteurs, and captured Trihedron agents locked up in high-security military prisons. All these individuals are given a choice — a stay of their sentence for service in a frontline unit, with each day back in service counting as three days locked up. Who would say no to such a deal? All recruited Kosuil then go through a crash-course in demolition, sabotage, and combat engineering to improve on their natural talents. High Command has no qualms about sending these race traitors to the worst areas of operations where life expectancy is minimal. After all, there’s no shortage of recruits looking to catch a ticket home. Most of the missions given to the Kosuil are something that a regular soldier would not be entrusted with for fear of destroying the morale of the unit. Think of the worst kind of operations where civilian or friendly casualties are not only expected, they’re calculated into the battle plan. That’s a mission where you send the Kosuil. For their part, they don’t complain because every day spent in service is another day out of the can.
