Background

The Corregidor Interdiction and Immediate Deployment Regiment are called the ‘Hellcats’ after the fierceness of its members and its focus on extreme measures. The Nomad Military Force maintains the Regiment at constant peak levels of fitness and readiness so that each battalion can deploy anywhere ‘in record time or faster. Due to its pivotal role in the functioning of the Nomad army, the Regiment entertains a vast amount of operational skills, but Hellcats mostly undertake airborne infiltration and exfiltration missions, and particularly Direct Action operations under extreme circumstances.

You really need to be made of stern stuff to make it in the Regiment. What Hellcats know as the standard operating procedure is basically an aircraft jump into the worst of the fray, armed with nothing but their personal gear and the best wishes of their commanding officer, without the faintest prospect of support. Despite the substantial risk involved in their operations, Hellcats are known to be jovial folk. Their philosophy is that, if they have been able to survive these missions so far, they really have nothing to fear anymore...[1]

Hellcats wear Peregrin integrated body armor. Specialising in infiltration and exfiltration missions in what can only be described as the most extreme of circumstances, the Hellcats are famously laissez-faire at the same time as being famously daring to the point of insanity. Operational insertion usually means airborne deployment, dropping the Hellcats into the thickest action with only the equipment they carry with them. As well as existing in a constant state of readiness, the Hellcats also ensure they maintain their gear in peak condition. They carry all weapons and ammunition for the very worst of expected outcomes, and the most significant part of their kit is their Peregrine armour. Given their role and airborne insertion, the armour designed for the Hellcats had to accommodate a large range of pressures and requirements. Protective without being restrictive, Peregrine armour was developed as the best solution given the operational parameters of the unit. Too many of the heavy body plates present in something like the Protega armour used by the Mobile Brigada posed problems for high impact drops.

Lighter than many forms of power armour, the Peregrine series eschews the heavy plating and protection in favour of a lighter and more flexible inner layer. Heavy elements are still utilised on the trunk and head, with pauldrons to protect the shoulders. Everywhere else is protected by a multi-layered and flexible tightweave comprised of a number of skins. One of these inner skins includes a cushioning smart-gel that aids in impact reduction during a high-altitude drop. The tightweave is protective and unrestrictive, designed to ensure that an uncomfortable landing doesn’t force an inflexible armoured plate through some vital organ. At the same time, it ensures the soldier is protected as well as technology allows when they hit the ground and find themselves in the middle of a shit storm. All in all, the Peregrine is a lesson in compromises. It is a piece of equipment that is tailor made for a purpose and achieves that purpose better than almost any example on the market. All of the capabilities built into the Peregrin are drawn from servos and shock absorption technology for powered armour.
