“There are no heroes here, just people who do their job well… and aren’t being paid enough!” Famous quote of Carlota Kowalsky, recorded during a news report for the Arachne net.

Carlota never thought she would end up in the army. She always thought she would enter the family tradition: space prospecting and EVA work. However, she discovered her mechanical aptitude and paid for her training and improvement classes by repairing her colleagues’ equipment. She was involved in the Base-Arakan litigation, joining the active resistance against the mercenaries of the MagnaObra Company. Captain Zakalwe, of the Intruder Command directing the defense until the arrival of the Phantom Military Force, recommended her for the Nomad army for her efforts. This enabled her to directly enter the Tomcats, the Special Emergency and Rescue Team. After an intense career, her involvement in the resolution of the C-7 diplomatic incident saw her promoted to the rank of Sergeant Major. Her new rank, including the corresponding salary improvement, has been a relief for her ruinous personal finances. Carlota Kowalsky can be defined as one hell of a Sergeant Major, a sharp genius who won’t tolerate silliness and is more than able to demolish any misogynist stereotype.

She is a woman with an extra-planetary look who is used to wearing campaign clothes. She has a face that insinuates intriguing contrasts: narrow and very dark, with sharp features and high cheekbones, fruit of the most genuine Corregidor crossbreeding. However, her facial expression is one usually associated with that of Nomad elite professionals: calm, alert, intelligent and very competent. Despite her attractive appearance, Carlota is one of the boys, and, usually, far better than them. Her comrades and superiors respect her greatly because she is responsible and never shirks when it’s time to work and get her hands dirty. A veteran of several campaigns already, and as lethal as the best holding a weapon, she is the most qualified engineering and maintenance specialist in her unit. The mechanical skills of Carlota are especially useful when fixing Moriarty, the name she gives to each new Zondcat assigned to her when its predecessor is destroyed. Poor Moriarty is in its eighth incarnation so far, and while Carlota remains in active service, it’s not likely to be the last one.

Carlota Kowalsky was born on Cetna, the Corregidoran Nomad Commercial Mission built into Chattaan, a large asteroid in the Varuna system. Her parents, Bonita and Leon Kowalsky, were space prospectors and EVA (extra-vehicular activity) specialists, who worked at Cetna and the space ports of Varuna performing maintenance work and cargo inspections for merchant vessels. With a majority of the family’s meagre earnings coming from their EVA contract work, prospecting the asteroid field for mineral deposits to flag and sell was a supplemental and intermittent income that consumed a disproportionate amount of the Kowalskys’ spare time. Through these family trips to prospect far-flung asteroids, Carlota spent a significant amount of her time trapped in their cramped ship, or suited up and outside. She had extensive EVA experience for her age.

Bonita Kowalsky was an intelligent woman, forever tinkering, while Carlota’s father, Leon, dreamed of saving enough to turn prospecting and mining into a full-time business. Unfortunately, Leon Kowalsky was terrible with money. Already a poor family, they struggled particularly because of Leon’s inability to manage the family finances, and far more was spent on fuel for prospecting trips than was earned through their finds. From a young age, Carlota was preoccupied with worries about money and the fear of not having enough.

When Carlota was fifteen, the quadrennial Nomad Krug was held on the edges of the Varuna system. The Kowalskys naturally joined in the festivities as best as their finances would allow. Reunited with their extended family aboard Corregidor, Carlota came to the attention of her uncle Pino as she was pulling apart and putting together pieces of a broken Remote in his family home. Pino, something of a self-taught mechanic, and like her parents, an EVA specialist, encouraged Leon and Bonita to let Carlota stay aboard Corregidor, and they in turn were convinced by the opportunities it would bring in comparison to a life led in Cetna. When the Krug broke up, and the many ships gradually departed the Varuna system via circulars, Carlota left too. For several years, Carlota spent much of her time working with her uncle completing EVAs, and in their spare time playing with machines of all stripes. It was clear that Carlota had an aptitude for mechanics, and even without a solid foundation in how things functioned, she was able to pull them apart or put them together. From the age of seventeen Carlota was earning extra money fixing her colleagues’ equipment, from tools to weapons and EVA gear. Every extra cent earned was spent on any course or piece of training she could afford to improve her mechanical skills. By the age of twenty-two she was a capable mechanic, with her skills extending to programming and electrical engineering.

Carlota and the Corregidoran EVA company she was working for suffered a horrendous setback when a seemingly routine extra-vehicular cargo attachment mission led to paranoid accusations of cargo-tampering. The dispute turned violent, and left her uncle dead along with several of Carlota’s workmates. The situation escalated, with the work orbital they were operating from coming under attack by mercenaries of the MagnaObra Company.

Corregidoran to her core, Carlota abandoned her tools and raised a Combi Rifle without hesitation. Actively helping to fight the mercenaries as they tried to reclaim their employer’s cargo and wipe out the Nomads, Carlota was noticed by Captain Zakalwe, who commanded the work orbital’s defence until backup arrived. Given her bravery and talent, Captain Zakalwe recommended her for the Nomad army, where she was able, by virtue of her skill set and potential, to enter training for the Tomcats, the Emergency and Rescue Special Team.

Her first years in the Tomcats were turbulent, fraught with danger, and explosive. Though incessantly complaining about how little she earned (she was as good with a budget as her father), she was fastidious, hard-working, and thoroughly professional. Her involvement in the C-7 diplomatic incident saw her raised to the rank of Sergeant Major, a rank she has filled with proficiency and élan. Forever repairing her battered Zondcat ‘Moriarty’, she is the best engineering and maintenance specialist in her unit as well as a highly capable soldier. Carlota Kowalsky is one of the elites in a unit of elites…

Carlota was an original RPG character from the first tabletop roleplaying game.

“If there’s discretion that you haven’t already abandoned; now would be a good time.”
–Kowalsky, to a new Tomcat recruit. Hostage rescue on board the pirate ship “Blood Talon,” Human Edge

"The Druze believe that a human life isn't worth more than the fee they charge. These guys are beyond redemption. They are a bunch of vicious bastards that enjoy killing as a business and having a good laugh about it."
–Briefing of Operation: Jackalope, a hostage rescue mission on the pleasure cruise ship Space Concordia. Svalarheima System[1]

"This is the standard scenario in which prison rules need to be applied. In other words: no rules. In Corregidor We play fast and loose, and we Tomcats are no different. We are the last resort in an emergency; we are only sent in when the situation is completely out of control. When you little soldiers don't know what to do anymore. When your asses need saving. We live for this kind of thing, for the fun stuff. And I'1l be honest: you won't be getting out of here by your own means. Lacking thrust capacity, your ship drifting, and your hull full of alien hostiles... The classic amusing disaster. So just let us have our fun, and tonight you'll be dining at home."
–Sergeant Major Carlota Kowalsky, Tomcat Unit, working for the Paradiso Coordinated Command. Rescue operation of the crew of the Pandavanian armed patrol POS "Guiding Light", Wotan Blockade. Second Paradiso Offensive.

"Oh, my!"
—Last words of the seventh incarnation of Moriarty the Zondcat upon running into a Drop Bear. Clandestine ops in PanOceania-administered Svalarheima.
