Background

In Khurland, the mining corporations had stumbled upon a totally unexpected problem, one that required the most expeditious solution possible. Furthermore, a problem of colossal proportions.

The gargantuan MegaBeasts posed a real threat to mining operations in Khurland. Not only because they endangered the lives of personnel, who can always be replaced, but also because these monsters were capable of destroying any facility they come across.

Therefore, to get rid of the problem, it was necessary to hunt them down and eradicate them before they could jeopardize production or the mining facilities. Hunting was an activity enjoying a new heyday thanks to the space race and the colonization of new planets. Besides being a professional career choice, it had also become a trendy pastime among the corporate jet-set. Executives could exhibit their killer instinct by hunting down other predators. There was no senior executive who hadn’t gone on a private safari to hunt a Cockatrickster on Paradiso or a Kythalos on Acontecimento, gigantic animals also considered to be MegaBeasts.

So, when the first reports of financial loss due to MegaBeasts reached the top corporate levels, the solution brought forth by their executives was to hire these experts to do what they did so well: put their lives on the line to wipe out these monsters.

A few days later, rugged, tough men and women began to show up in Port Sulaco, with their big, extravagant weapons, crooked smiles, and a gleam of anticipation in their eyes. Hunters had arrived in Khurland, and they were the solution to the MegaBeast problem.[1]

The Human Sphere? It’s big. Plenty of space for all creatures small and large. Very, very large. The bigger they are, the more intriguing and attractive they are, and the more willing people are to pay for them - as pets, as pelts, as pieces in a collection. Megafauna exist across human space.

Svatfangs.

Kyhtalos.

Steingdrages. Cockatrickster.

Stoorworms.

Uaktis.

Nucklavees.

These are megabeasts. There are enough Megabeasts out there that a few individuals can make a living as hunters and trappers focusing on megafauna. Do you want to know more? Read “Mad” Matt Donovan’s book, MegaBeast Hunting Is Not For Rookies. Seriously.” Beasthunters are rare; one needs to be extremely fit - those that aren’t end up dead or smashed against rocks. The vibe of beasthunters is that they are highly elitist. They always brag about who’s hunted the most, who’s bagged the biggest, and who has the fattest bank account The legal trade is large. Many Beasthunters are actually collections team members of Xenozoology universities. However, the illegal trade is even longer. Anyway, who would possibly pay for Beasthunters? Well, the rich. Submondo lords have private zoos. Trillionaires have eccentric menageries. Some scientific groups hire perfectly legal and bonded beasthunters for non-lethal activities or humane culling.

And conveniently, Beasthunter tactics are useful when fighting TAGs as well as megabeasts!

Beasthunters work for Ramah Task Force, as the wilds of Haqqislam and the Al-Medinat Caliphate do have various fauna that need to be culled and are desired by big game hunters. Beasthunters also work for Foreign Company, knowing that the glitzy PR and glamor of working alongside ForCo makes brings just as much pride as taking out any megabeast. The fearsome, lethal creatures on Svalarheima mean that there are a substantial number of Beasthunters on the planet; although there are more on Dawn, Svalarheima’s robust market for mercenaries means that Beasthunters are an easy get when White Company needs some extra muscle-for-hire.
